These bachelor's degrees are given in 28 major subjects. Subjects and academic programs like business administration, biology, psychology, exercise and health science, and education produce the highest number of graduates every year from Alma College. Students of Alma College are encouragements to take active part in service learning and study abroad opportunities that are designed and planned as the further enhancement of the classroom learning.
The stated mission of Alma College is very simple and optimistic. The college wants to prepare graduates who can think critically, serve generously, lead purposefully and live responsibly. The college wants their students to work and perform as stewards of the world which they present to future generations. Alma College was a notable member of the 81 schools in the United States which were selected in the year 2005 as a College with a Conscience. It was one of the 81 Great Schools that had exceptional community involvement. This selection was done by The Princeton Review and Campus Compact.
Alma College was founded in the year 1886 by the Michigan Presbyterians. The college received huge funding form the well known lumber magnet Ammi wright. The Wright hall in the campus of Alma College as well as the Wright Avenue of the city of Alma was named after this noble businessman. At first the mascot of Alma College was fighting Presbyterians. Alma College till date maintains a very good and close relationship with the Presbyterian Church but at present Alma College treats every student equally irrespective of their religious backgrounds.
In the month of January in the year 1997 Alan Stone who was the president of Alma College at that time asked about 480 colleges to boycott the report rankings given by the U.S. News and World. These reports contained the peer assessments which was responsible for a quarter of the ranking of a particular college. In a survey made in the year 1996 Alma College found that many of the colleges doing the peer assessment are unfamiliar with the colleges they are assessing. For this reason many of the assessors tend to keep the responses for the schools blank which ultimately results in a drop at the rank. The boycott was finalized in the year 2007 after a meeting with the Annapolis Group.
Alma College uses a 14 week term in the fall and winter as well as a four week term in May. The May term is good for innovative course patterns, travel classes, research and internship. Due to its small size Alma College can provide it's students a number of opportunities. It offers a real cadaver laboratory for the Pre-medical students. The college also provides several grants to he students for the research purpose.
