During the third quarter of the 19th century Union College sufferdc from a decline in the student enrollment. At that time the Union College had to rebuilt and redefine its programs. In the recent years the Union College offers several educational programs which include liberal arts, science as well as engineering. At present almost 50% of the students enrolled pursue science or engineering. The recent student strength of Union College is 2200. the male and female ratio among the students are equally distributed.
In the recent times Union College has taken over a huge number of the old Fraternity houses. The college has created the Minerva House system. The name of the system is derived from the name of the Goddess of wisdom Minerva who appears in the college shield.
In th Minerva House system when a fresh student enters the Union College he or she is randomly placed in a Minerva house. Every minerva house has an annual budget for the planning of activities and events fro its members. The member of any Minerva House can go and join the event of any other Minerva house.
The students of Union College can also join the Theme Houses. At present Union College has 12 active Theme Houses. The Theme houses of Union College include
- Wells house which is dedicated to Community service
- Symposium House, which is dedicated to holding discussions with faculty members and students.
- Art House
- Music and Culture House
- Two Language houses
- Ozone house
The Union College along with Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Medical College, Dudley Observatory, Graduate College of Union University came together to form the Union University. Union University is a historic linkage that dates back to the year 1873. Every member of the University have their own governing board, fiscal body and own programs.
Union College from time to time have produced many notable alumnies. Their alumnies include seven cabinet secrataries, fifteen United States Senators, 91 members of the House of Representatives and thirteen governors. The list also include several diplomats, judges, missionaries, generals and college presidents. Two of the alumnies of Union College held the title of Secretary of States at the same time in different parts of the country. This is a very uncommon honor to Union College. Union College is also referred to as the mother of fraternity as it is home for many Fraternity program.
